Artist’s Books & Bindings 1

FAT CHANCE, 2006 (one of a kind) NFS

Found diet pamphlets sewn all along on handmade leather belts that run through the center of the boards, with painted text block edges and French double headbands. Covered in three-quarter leather (goat) with Fabriano Roma fore edge covers and found measuring tape. Belt closures have standard holes, as well as extra holes hand punched to accommodate the added girth of the book. Everything about the book is purposely over-scaled. The resulting book speaks to the futility of the quick fix while allowing us to relate to the person who bought so many of these pamphlets, each one of which initially held great hope. 16.5 x 15.3 x 10 centimeters.

CHAOS, 2004

This piece traveled with the Stand & Deliver exhibit of pop-up books, curated by Ed Hutchins. The book begins in reverse order from a “regular” book, with a “butterfly” ballot in Florida, whose flapping wings create a growing turbulence that knocks down a tree in Oregon. The end of the book, which is really the beginning, reveals the organized effort behind these seemingly chaotic events.

NEST, 2006 (one of a kind)

“Nest” began with a gift from a friend – a hornet’s nest that begged closer inspection. There are so many metaphors inherent in the lines of color – they intrigued me as visual compositions. It felt fitting to present them in an architectural format that could be shifted and reconfigured with each showing.

Nest material laminated to binder’s board, Rising Stonehenge Black, German Ingres, Japanese screen hinges, in custom protective enclosure.

Book: 1 3/8 inches (h) x 1 inch (w) x 3/4 inch (d)

Handmade paper crafted from abaca fiber and made to size with natural deckles relief printed and re-bound in a two-needle chain stitch. Leather covered cover boards with inset relief print. This began as a miniature blank book that was disbound, then the pages were printed with imagery derived from a threadbare quilt from the thrift store. The rebinding reveals the artifacts of the first life of the book. It is nestled in a bed of fabric from an unfinished and discarded quilt project that was working towards a "double wedding ring" pattern.

My Waitress Dreams, 2003
(edition of 25) $65

Second only to "I can't remember my high school locker combination" or "There's a test today and I haven't been to class all year", I suspect that waitress dreams are universal for former food service workers. This book, (3.5 inches high by 6 inches wide) outlines the details of my own reoccurring dreams of running all night long trying to wait on tables.

Silk screened onto tissue paper wrapped around real guest checks, stab bound with relief printed wrap back cover. 4 copies available
